I hate venues that do that and best I can tell, that is the sattus quo around here. I was in a band that played at several venues and was always amazed at how bad the timing was. It is horrible customer service, and even worse for the bands who have to sound check at 5, hang around starting at 7 (when the show was scheduled for 8), go on at 11:30, leave the stage at 2am, then pack up and go home by 4 all for $0 or a portion of the door which rarely exceeded $150. Bands are usually desperate enough to put up with that (hoping for better after generating more interest), but now that I’m just a customer, I don’t mess with it. If the show starts at 11, be honest about it and post that the show starts at 11! Cain’s Ballroom is my favorite place to see shows for that reason. They’ll have a show with three bands starting at 7 where the first band goes on at 7! The second is on at 8, third at 9 just like clockwork. $2 for miller lite and you can get a 6 pack with the rings to hold them together. Smoker have their area outside and if you need a break from the noise, there’s a side bar to go to. Why is that so hard for other venues?
